Two teenage phishing suspects arrested

Two teenagers from the southern Dutch town of Oosterhout have been arrested in connection with a scam involving a fake Tikkie payment website.

According to the regional morning daily Brabants Dagblad, the two suspects found their victims mainly on the leading Dutch online trading site Marktplaats. They asked their victims to transfer one euro cent, supposedly to make sure that they were dealing with a trustworthy person. However, as their targets entered their bank details, the two copied the information. The suspects subsequently emptied their victims’ bank account. In this article from January 2017, we describe how such scams work.

Police are investigating 42 reports. The total amount of money stolen is thought to exceed € 20,000. The two young men were both born in 1999.
