Fake text messages from ‘Dutch government’

27 February 2019

Cyber criminals are sending out fake SMS text messages asking recipients to visit the Dutch government’s service portal. Please ignore these messages. They are designed to steal your personal details.

The text messages are supposedly sent by a bank. They ask recipients to log on to ‘MijnOverheid’ with their DigiD credentials. DigiD is the Dutch government’s secure login system. Next, recipients are asked to enter their International Bank Account Number (IBAN).

These SMS text messages are a phishing scam. The link given in them directs to a fake website. Don’t click on any link in these messages. MijnOverheid has also issued a warning against these messages.

Our advice
If you receive a text message from the Dutch government, please ignore it. Don’t click on the link provided in it. Government institutions and banks never send any such requests via SMS text messages.
