Blackmail email after ‘watching porn’

15 September 2017

An unknown number of internet users have received rather awkward email messages in recent days. An extortionist claims that he has secretly filmed recipients while watching a porn website. And he threatens to spread those images.

Recipients of these email messages are told they can prevent this from happening by transferring a certain amount of money to a Bitcoin. They are given just one day to pay. The account number is given in the email. If they refuse to pay, then the blackmailer will send the images to victim’s contact list.

There are different versions of this extortion scam. The text (in broken English) is very similar in most cases, but the subject line varies. Here are three examples of these messages  (click to enlarge):

Our advice
You can safely delete these email messages. The threats shouldn’t be taken seriously. They are fake. No images will be sent to your contacts, if you fail to pay. After all, the images don’t exist.
